Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh issued a statement in response to the Israeli general elections, expressing hope that the vote would produce a political partner willing to end the occupation of Palestinian territories and work toward a just peace. He shared the message through his official account on the social media platform X.
While acknowledging the elections as an internal Israeli matter, al-Sheikh stated: "We hope the elections will produce a partner who believes that the occupation of Palestine must end and that a just peace must be achieved." He also underlined the importance of international law and United Nations resolutions, describing their implementation as the key to achieving security, peace and stability in the region.
With more than 93 percent of votes counted, the ruling bloc led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held 53 seats, while the opposition bloc headed by former Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot secured 48 seats. Neither bloc reached the 61-seat majority needed to form a government in the 120-seat Knesset.
One of the most notable outcomes of the election was the historic performance of parties representing Arab Palestinian citizens of Israel, who collectively won 19 seats in the Knesset, placing them in a pivotal position in any potential coalition negotiations.
