The United States State Department has approved a potential arms sale worth $2.1 billion to Ukraine, aimed at bolstering the country's air defense capabilities. The package includes 500 PAC-3 missiles along with associated equipment.
In an official statement, the State Department said the sale would enhance Ukraine's security and support US foreign policy and national security objectives. It was also emphasized that the full cost of the transaction would be borne by allies and partners, with no US government funds involved.
Under the financing arrangement, Ukraine will cover the cost through the JUMPSTART program, drawing on contributions from Canada, Germany, and Norway, as well as national funds supported by the European Union's Ukraine Support Loan.
US defense contractor Lockheed Martin will serve as the primary contractor for the sale. The PAC-3 missile is the most advanced variant of the Patriot air defense system, designed to intercept ballistic missiles and other aerial threats with high precision.
