Around 350 hotels in South Cyprus are at risk of closure if they fail to meet fire safety regulations by February of next year, according to a report by Politis newspaper. Compliance within the set deadline is not expected for the majority of these establishments.
Three political parties — DISY, DIKO, and ELAM — have jointly drafted a legislative proposal to grant the affected hotels a two-year extension to bring their properties up to standard. The proposal aims to prevent mass closures across the island's hospitality sector.
The situation poses a significant challenge to South Cyprus's tourism industry, which relies heavily on these hotels for seasonal capacity. The outcome of the legislative effort will be closely watched by hoteliers and workers whose livelihoods depend on the sector.
