South Nicosia's central streets will face traffic restrictions and parking bans on Wednesday as the city hosts the annual Oxi Day parade and a church service at the Apostle Barnabas Cathedral near the Archbishopric, police announced.
Parking will be prohibited from midnight on Tuesday along several key roads, including Korai, Isokratous, Zinonos Kitieos and Michalakis Karaolis streets, as well as Konstantinos Palaiologos, Homer, Byron and Evagoros avenues and Archbishopric Square.
From 9am on Wednesday, Homer Avenue between Egypt Street and Eleftheria Square and Byron Avenue from the Museum traffic lights to Grivas Digenis Avenue will be closed to traffic. From 9.30am, additional closures will cover the full parade route along Byron and Homer avenues, Michalakis Karaolis Street and Demosthenis Severis Avenue toward Grigoris Afxentiou Avenue. The section of Makarios III Avenue between the Central Police Station traffic lights and Evagoros Avenue will also be off-limits to ordinary vehicles.
Drivers attending the parade are directed to park at the D'Avila bastion car park, the area beside the moat below the old town hall, the fire station car park or the parking area near the Kolokasi opening.
After 9.30am, urban buses from Strovolos, Lakatamia, Anthoupolis, Parissinos, Engomi, Ayios Dhometios and Ayios Pavlos will serve passengers at the Rigenis Street car park near the Solomos statue. Buses from Pallouriotissa, Kaimakli, Aglandjia, Dasoupolis and Latsia will use Kaningos Bridge near the Oxi kiosk.
Police urged spectators to remain on pavements throughout the parade and motorists to follow officers' on-site instructions. The use of drones during the celebrations is strictly prohibited.
