A fairy chimney suddenly collapsed in the Göreme district of Nevşehir, Turkey, killing three people and injuring five others. A 40-strong Cypriot tourist group that was in the area at the time has confirmed all members are safe.
Cypriot businessman Tuygun Töre, who was accompanying the group, posted a reassurance on social media after worried relatives and friends began frantically trying to reach the travellers. He noted that disruptions to phone lines had amplified the panic among those who knew the group was visiting the region.
"Dear friends, as you may know, a fairy chimney collapsed in Cappadocia a few hours ago. As a 40-person Cypriot tour group, we were in the same area at the time. Our relatives and friends who knew we were here naturally grew worried and tried to reach us. Since the phone lines were also down at that point, some people panicked," Töre wrote, adding: "I am pleased to say we are all fine and experienced no problems, thank goodness."
Töre extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the collapse and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
