Cyprus Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas announced that Greek Air Force F-16 fighter jets and a Hellenic Navy warship are continuously stationed on the island. He clarified that this arrangement is not governed by a formal bilateral agreement, but that Nicosia has actively sought to maintain a permanent Greek military presence on Cyprus.
On the same day as Palmas's remarks, Turkish combat and support aircraft conducted extensive training flights over southern Cyprus, bringing renewed attention to the scale of military activity in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The developments underscore a deepening de facto military integration between Cyprus and Greece, even in the absence of a formally ratified basing treaty. Whether the Greek military presence will eventually be formalized through a permanent agreement remains an open question.
