The Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Engineers and Architects (KTMMOB) has strongly condemned verbal and physical attacks on journalists carrying out their professional duties. KTMMOB President Görkem Çelik, speaking on behalf of the 57th Term Board of Directors, called on the competent authorities to take the necessary steps and hold those responsible accountable before the law.
In his written statement, Çelik stressed that violence against journalists does not only target members of the press, but also threatens society's right to information and democratic values. He underlined that no justification can legitimise violence or intimidation.
"As KTMMOB, we stand in solidarity with the journalists who have been attacked and call on the authorities to take action and ensure that those responsible face justice," Çelik said, adding that the organisation would continue to firmly defend press freedom, freedom of expression and the public's right to be informed.
The statement concluded that KTMMOB would not remain silent in the face of violence against the press and would resolutely uphold democratic values.
