Engin Deniz Görgüner, chairman of the Liberal Democracy Movement (LDH), has called on both the government and opposition parties to take concrete steps to address the air pollution problem at the Teknecik Power Plant in northern Cyprus.
Citing measurements by the Environmental Protection Department for 2025, Görgüner noted that some pollution indicators in the Teknecik area exceed the air quality limits set by the European Union for 2030. He argued that the gap between current levels and EU standards underscores the urgency of modernising the plant.
Görgüner stressed that the problem has been known for years and that viable solutions exist, including the installation of flue gas desulphurisation systems and filters, the use of cleaner fuels, and the replacement of ageing generation units. He also reminded the public that commitments had previously been made to install filters at the plant, and demanded that the government update citizens on the status of those promises.
Addressing the opposition as well, the LDH leader said all parties should come forward with detailed, costed modernisation plans that identify clear funding sources. He called for an independent technical review of the plant, determination of feasible remediation options, and the publication of a transparent implementation timetable open to public scrutiny.
