The Cyprus Turkish Teachers' Union (KTÖS) has announced a strike at Atatürk Primary School in Nicosia on Friday, October 30, after the Ministry of National Education rejected a request to close the school for one day following the detection of dangerously high levels of coliform bacteria in its water tank.

KTÖS Secretary-General Burak Maviş stated in a written announcement that the school administration had sought a single day's closure to allow for proper water testing and to ensure the safety of the premises, but the ministry denied the request.

Maviş argued that continuing education without first securing safe water and hygiene conditions for children put both students and staff at serious health risk. "We will not put the health of our children, teachers and school staff at risk," he said, warning that the union would proceed with the strike unless the ministry took immediate action.

Should the ministry fail to act, KTÖS members will be on strike at Atatürk Primary School between 08:00 and 12:40, with a press statement scheduled outside the school at 10:30.
