According to a report in the Greek press, France has favoured postponing GSI, the planned electricity interconnector project between Greece, the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC) and Israel. The claim surfaced after the Libyan House of Representatives ratified the memorandum of understanding on the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas signed between Türkiye and Libya in 2019.
As reported by the Greek newspaper Ta Nea, until the memorandum was ratified by the Libyan House of Representatives, France had been aware of "neither the magnitude of the problem between Greece and Türkiye nor the Libyan danger". The newspaper claimed that, with this development, Paris felt the need to reassess the situation in the region.
The report stated that, following the announcement from Benghazi on the ratification decision, France proposed postponing the project in order to assess the situation. Greece, meanwhile, is said to be unwilling to accept any change to the project timetable and to be insisting that the schedule be maintained.
The Libyan House of Representatives ratified the memorandum of understanding on the delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas, signed between Türkiye and Libya in 2019, on 20 October. The decision provoked a strong reaction in Athens.
Opposition parties in Greece also described the ratification process in Libya as a foreign policy failure by the government.
