Speaker of the Republican Assembly and National Unity Party (UBP) Güzelyurt MP Ziya Öztürkler said his objection to the results of the party's parliamentary candidate selection and ranking vote, held on Saturday, remains in place, but that he will respect whatever decision is announced.
In a written statement, Öztürkler stressed that lodging an objection is the most natural right in a democracy, adding that he had exercised it as a politician who trusts his grassroots supporters.
Noting that authority over the process now lies with the party's Presidium and headquarters, Öztürkler said: "With my trust and faith in the grassroots of our UBP, while my objection continues, I would like to state that I will respect every decision to be announced."
Urging that the party should not be damaged, Öztürkler said the debate should be brought to a swift end so that the UBP can focus on its path to government. "I believe we must end the debate as soon as possible without harming our party and focus on our journey to power," he said.
He concluded: "I have not the slightest doubt that our party base will give the best answer regarding this entire process at the ballot box."
