National Unity Party (UBP) MP Emrah Yeşilırmak has called for the votes in his party's parliamentary candidate selection and ranking election to be recounted, saying he will withdraw his candidacy if the recount produces the same result.
Speaking on a live broadcast by Haber Kıbrıs at the Atatürk Sports Hall, Yeşilırmak addressed the ongoing debate over the candidate rankings and the demands for a recount.
Yeşilırmak stressed that the 17 objections formally lodged should be taken into account and the votes counted again. Noting that around 9,000 people had cast their ballots to express their will, he said it was only natural for votes to be recounted when there are objections to the results.
Addressing those opposed to a recount, Yeşilırmak asked: "Why are they afraid? Let them open the boxes and count."
He added that if the recount confirms the original outcome, he will take no further action. "I will do nothing, I will go my own way and I will not be a candidate," he said.
