Greece's General Secretariat for Civil Protection has raised the alert level to red — the highest state of readiness — in nine regions across the country, as severe rainfall and storms continue to batter the mainland and islands. The warnings are set to remain in effect until Thursday.
The regions placed under red alert include Euboea, Phthiotis, Boeotia, the Sporades, Magnesia, Larissa, Attica (which includes Athens), the Dodecanese, and the Northern Aegean. Authorities expect the adverse weather conditions to persist through the end of the week.
Residents have been urged to avoid all non-essential travel and to stay away from areas at risk of flooding. Civil protection officials stressed the importance of heeding safety warnings as emergency services remain on standby across the affected regions.
