Ulusal Birlik Partisi (UBP) leader and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel held pre-election consultation meetings in Dikmen, Çatalköy and Karşıyaka ahead of the upcoming municipal elections in North Cyprus. Üstel announced that UBP is fielding 18 candidates across 18 municipalities and fired back at the opposition's calls for accountability.
Responding directly to opposition rhetoric about holding the government to account, Üstel said: "There is no subject on which we cannot account for ourselves. We are ready both to give account and to demand it. Come, let us form a committee to examine everything done since 2020." He argued that politics cannot be reduced to accusations and criticism, and challenged all parties to present their record of service to the public.
Criticising the opposition for failing to put forward concrete proposals, Üstel stated: "What matters is being able to explain what you have done when you stand before the people. The public knows you and what you have done." He maintained that elections are won through deeds, not words, and pledged that UBP's five-year record of investment would be communicated clearly to voters.
On housing, Üstel reiterated his government's target of building 15,000 homes to enable young people to own property and build families in North Cyprus. "We will introduce new initiatives that touch the lives of our children, youth, women and elderly — initiatives that will bring relief to every segment of society," he said.
Üstel also criticised certain municipalities for taking credit for projects funded and built by the central government. "We built the roads, we built the schools. Yet they try to put their own names on these works. If you had no part in building a project, do not come forward and claim it," he said.
The Prime Minister announced that UBP's major candidate presentation event will be held on 7 November at the Atatürk Sports Hall, and invited all party members and their families to attend.
