Dr. Bekir Paşaoğlu, the National Unity Party (UBP) candidate for Kyrenia mayor, outlined a comprehensive urban transport master plan during a live broadcast on Genç TV, addressing what he described as one of the city's most pressing problems. He noted that traveling through Kyrenia's center from east to west can cost commuters between 30 and 45 minutes, and argued that the issue cannot be resolved through temporary fixes but requires scientifically grounded, radical measures.
Paşaoğlu said the plan was developed with the input of engineers and experts from both Northern Cyprus and Turkey, building on a 2015 traffic master plan that has now been updated. "We will soon share our modern, comprehensive solutions for both intra-city and inter-city transportation with the public," he said.
The key infrastructure element of the plan is an Eastern Ring Road to be implemented in coordination with the central government. Within the city center, ring traffic systems, directional controls, and barrier arrangements are also planned. Additionally, time-based restrictions on heavy vehicles entering the city during peak hours are included to prevent gridlock.
On public transport, Paşaoğlu pledged to modernize the minibus network, improving cleanliness and seating standards to ensure safe and comfortable service. He also committed to clearing pavements of illegally parked vehicles and introducing cycle lanes, with the goal of creating a safer and more livable urban mobility environment in Kyrenia.
