Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodulidis described the coming days as highly significant for the Cyprus issue, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the October 28 'Ohi Day' parade commemorating Greece's refusal of the Italian ultimatum in 1940. He stressed that despite ongoing difficulties, his side would not abandon its goals of ending the occupation and reunifying the island.
'I want to reiterate that there are many problems, many difficulties and challenges,' Hristodulidis said, 'but looking at where we stood at the beginning of 2023, it is evident that with a clear plan, patience and persistence, positive outcomes are achievable.' He also confirmed that his recent meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman took place in a very positive and constructive atmosphere.
Hristodulidis pledged to do everything in his power to bring about positive developments, and touched on the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) electricity project, saying that matters relating to the exercise of Cyprus's sovereign rights are handled away from the public eye and public statements.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, arrived on the island. Her visit comes ahead of a tripartite meeting scheduled for November 9. Greek Cypriot newspaper Politis described her visit as 'Guterres' last effort,' while Haravgi noted that the political landscape remains clouded, with limited expectations for substantive progress.
Holguin is set to meet Hristodulidis first, followed by a meeting with Erhürman on Monday, and will hold further contacts with negotiators and other stakeholders throughout the week. According to reports, she aims to gauge the genuine intentions of both sides and explore whether there is room for agreement on Confidence Building Measures, particularly the opening of new crossing points. The two sides remain divided, with the Greek Cypriot side insisting on resuming talks from where they left off at Crans Montana, while the Turkish Cypriot side emphasises the issue of political equality.
