South Cyprus posted a fertility rate of 1.39 births per woman in 2024, according to data published by Eurostat. The figure places the island's southern part above the European Union average of 1.34.
Despite ranking above the EU mean, the rate remains far short of the 2.10 level considered necessary for a population to sustain itself without migration. Rates below this threshold are generally associated with long-term population decline.
The figures indicate that while South Cyprus performs relatively well compared to many EU member states on this measure, it shares the broader European challenge of below-replacement fertility.
