A man who tortured and killed his neighbor's cat in South Nicosia in 2021 has been ordered to serve an immediate two-month prison sentence after the Republic of Cyprus Court of Appeal overturned the original suspended ruling.
The unnamed individual had struck the cat repeatedly on the head with a broomstick, severely injuring the animal, and then thrown it—still alive—into a trash bin. The Nicosia District Court had initially handed down a two-month sentence but suspended it for three years.
Upon appeal, the higher court annulled the suspension and ordered that the sentence be carried out without delay. In its ruling, the court cited the need to deter not only the offender but also others from committing acts of cruelty against animals.
The decision is considered significant in the context of animal rights enforcement in Cyprus, as courts have often been criticized for issuing lenient or suspended penalties in cases of animal abuse. The case was widely reported by Cypriot media outlets including Alithia.
